[en] The article proposes to establish, by forging the term of borealism, a research program whose ambition would be to trace the history of displacements, transformations, circulations referring to the “North”. Going beyond the definition of borealism as a transposition of orientalism, it explores the conceptual frameworks of such a program, by crossing the epistemological tools that the historical sciences, geography, comparative literature and more generally cultural history have developed in the field of the history of representations. Borealism thus appears as a framework for thinking a spatial conceptuality refusing an essentialization of the “North” and the collective imagination associated with it, and to grasp a dynamic process redefining the “North” at each utterance.

[fr] L’article se propose d’établir, en forgeant le terme de boréalisme, un programme de recherche dont l’ambition serait de tracer l’histoire des déplacements, des transformations, des circulations qui se réfèrent au « Nord ». Dépassant la définition d’un boréalisme comme transposition de l’orientalisme, il explore les cadres conceptuels d’un tel programme et croise les outils épistémologiques que les sciences historiques, la géographie, la littérature comparée et plus généralement l’histoire culturelle ont développés dans le domaine de l’histoire des représentations. Le boréalisme apparaît alors comme un cadre pour penser une conceptualité spatiale qui refuse une essentialisation du « Nord » et de l’imaginaire collectif qui lui est associé, et pour saisir un processus dynamique qui redéfinit le « Nord » à chaque énonciation.
