Résumé

[en] This essay aims to explore the representation of masculinity and femininity in Flores ochBlanzeflor, a fourteenth-century Swedish adaptation of the popular roman idyllique Floire etBlanchefleur, and to discuss how the gender roles they reveal can be related to the context inwhich the romance was written. Flores och Blanzeflor presents a strong segregation of gender, inwhich women are limited to the domestic and spiritual sphere and are punished for trying totransgress social boundaries, while men are free to roam the world, to engage in politics andeven to question social order in the name of justice. The women of the romance, however, areable to develop strategies that allow them to safely influence important decisions made by themen close to them. The essay discusses the extent to which these strategies can be read astraces of a feminine voice shaping the translation of the text and suggests that this voice maybe that of Eufemia, Queen of Norway, presenting a model of womanly conduct to her soon-to-be-married daughter, Ingeborg.
