[en] A key figure in the reign of Louis XV, a man from the world of Parisian robe whose diversified career and multiple cultural activities made him a renowned figure of the Age of Enlightenment, Jean-François Ogier d'Hénonville (1703-1775) was also, throughout his various careers, a singular model of the “honnête homme”. Ideal of life widely disseminated in the high society of the 17th century, the “honnêteté”, combining social skills and the practice of virtues, did not disappear from the varied field of social behaviour in the 18th century, despite the ideological and socio-cultural changes of the period. The confrontation of the different aspects of President Ogier’s life with their social, political, economic, cultural and religious context makes possible to highlight the continuities and discontinuities, the determinisms and the freedoms in the multiple path of a statesman, member of the robin aristocracy of a declining Ancien Régime. Jean-François Ogier was a character at the hinge between tradition and modernity. A faithful and zealous servant of the royal power, as a magistrate, diplomat and State Councillor, he was nonetheless a man deeply attached to his convictions as a Jansenist parliamentarian, defender of the freedom of superior courts and of provincial privileges. He was able, as best he could, to maintain a balance between two positions that were a priori irreconcilable, thus demonstrating, through his experience, the contradictions of a society in the throes of change.

[fr] Figure marquante du règne de Louis XV, personnage issu du monde de la robe parisienne dont la carrière diversifiée et les multiples activités culturelles ont su faire de lui une personnalité renommée du siècle des Lumières, Jean-François Ogier d’Hénonville (1703-1775) fut aussi, au fil de ses différents parcours, un modèle singulier de l’honnête homme. Idéal de vie largement diffusé dans la haute société du XVIIe siècle, l’honnêteté, mêlant savoir-vivre en société et pratique des vertus, n’a pas disparu du champ varié des comportements sociaux du XVIIIe siècle, en dépit des évolutions idéologiques et socio-culturelles de la période. La confrontation des différents aspects de la vie du président Ogier avec leur contexte social, politique, économique, culturel et religieux permet de mettre en évidence les continuités et les discontinuités, les déterminismes et les libertés dans le parcours multiple d’un homme d’État issu de l’aristocratie robine d’un Ancien Régime en déclin. Jean-François Ogier se situait comme un personnage à la charnière entre la tradition et la modernité. Serviteur fidèle et zélé du pouvoir royal, comme magistrat, diplomate et conseiller d’État, il n’en fut pas moins un homme profondément attaché à ses convictions de parlementaire janséniste, défenseur de la liberté des cours supérieures et des privilèges provinciaux. Il a su, tant bien que mal, maintenir l’équilibre entre deux positions a priori inconciliables, manifestant ainsi, à travers son expérience, les contradictions d’une société en pleine mutation.
