[en] The Swedish jultomte is a Christmas figure having its origins in the fokloric creature called the tomte. In this article, we will follow its evolution from the popular beliefs of the Middle Ages, to today’s children’s literature, as well as to its current form as the equivalent of Santa Claus. We’ll demonstrate how the tomte gets kinder in the hands of authors and illustrators like Viktor Rydberg and Jenny Nyström. Great authors like Selma Lagerlöf and Astrid Lindgren have also had an impact ont this mythical figure and more broadly on the Christmas tradition. Through recent children’s books, the character continues to evolve, yet remains largely faithful to the image born in the 19th century. The article will end with a presentation of the appearance and fonctions of the current jultomte, wich will allow a comparison with the Santa Claus of American and European myth. A precise definition of this mythical figure is however difficult to establish as it allows diverse and parallel interprétations, both collective and individual.

[fr] Le jultomte suédois est une figure de Noël ayant ses origines dans la créature folklorique appelée tomte. Dans cet article, nous suivrons son évolution à partir des croyances populaires du Moyen-Âge, jusqu’à la littérature pour enfants d’aujourd’hui, ainsi qu’à sa forme actuelle d’équivalent du Père Noël. Nous démontrerons comment le tomte devient de plus en plus gentil aux mains d’auteurs et illustrateurs tels Viktor Rydberg et Jenny Nyström. De grandes auteures comme Selma Lagerlöf et Astrid Lindgren ont également eu un impact sur ce personnage mythique et plus largement sur la tradition de Noël. A travers un certain nombre de livres pour enfants récents, le personnage ne cesse de se transformer, mais reste en grande partie fidèle à l’image née au XIXe siècle. L’article se terminera par une présentation de l’apparence et des fonctions du jultomte actuel, ce qui permettra une comparaison avec le Père Noël du mythe américain et européen. Une définition précise du jultomte s’avère cependant difficile à établir car en tant que figure mythique, il permet des interprétations diverses et parallèles, à la fois collectives et individuelles.

I den här artikeln följs dess utveckling från medeltidens populära föreställningar, till dagens barnlitteratur, och till dess nuvarande form som motsvarigheten till Santa Claus/Père Noël. Artikeln visar hur tomten blir snällare i händerna på författare och illustratörer som Viktor Rydberg och Jenny Nyström. Stora författare som Selma Lagerlöf och Astrid Lindgren har också påverkat denna mytomspunna figur och mer allmänt den svenska jultraditionen. Tomten fortsätter att utvecklas i senare barnböcker, men förblir i stort sett trogen bilden som föddes på 1800-talet. Artikeln avslutas med en presentation av den nuvarande jultomtens utseende och funktioner, vilket möjliggör en jämförelse med jultomten i den amerikanska och europeiska myten. En exakt definition av denna mytiska figur är dock svår att fastställa eftersom den tillåter olika och parallella tolkningar, både kollektiva och individuella.
